Over 16 people were injured in the firing that took place in a subway station in New York's Brooklyn on Tuesday around 8:30 am (according to US time). The incident created panic among the passengers who had gathered to fetch the tube to reach their respective destinations. The New York Police are still on the search for the shooter who is wearing a green construction vest and a gas mask according to the eyewitnesses. The attack had taken place at the 36th Street station in the borough’s Sunset Park neighborhood.

The New York Police immediately closed down the tube to avoid more attacks on passengers and cordoned off the area. A combing operation is taking place to locate the shooter who according to officials is hiding in the nearby area.

Minutes after the attack social media was abuzz with passengers tweeting photographs showing commuters with blood on their clothes being helped by others, as they sat with their back to a metro train.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) officials, told the reporters that no active explosive devices were found at the scene of the Brooklyn subway during the preliminary search operation. However, the NYPD tweeted, "Due to an investigation, avoid the area of 36th Street and 4th Avenue area in Brooklyn. Expect emergency vehicles and delays in the surrounding area."

The NYPD is investigating the incident at war footing. However, it's early to ascertain the exact number of casualties. The number of injured may go up as the investigation progresses.
