Indian Coast Guard rescues nine injured fishermen off Andhra Coast in Bay of Bengal


In a valiant rescue operation off the Andhra coast in the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Veera successfully saved nine fishermen who sustained severe burn injuries following a catastrophic fire and subsequent explosion on their vessel, the Durga Bhavani, on 5 April 2024. The incident occurred approximately 65 nautical miles from Visakhapatnam harbour.


The ICGS Veera, while patrolling, responded immediately upon receiving a distress signal from a nearby fishing boat, alerting them to the emergency. The Durga Bhavani, having set sail from Kakinada harbour on 26 March 2024, encountered disaster when a gas cylinder on board exploded, leading to an inferno that forced the crew to leap into the sea, with some suffering critical injuries.


Racing against time, ICGS Veera reached the scene in just a few hours, demonstrating remarkable speed and efficiency. The survivors were promptly rescued and received first aid aboard the ship, showcasing the Coast Guard's preparedness and commitment to maritime safety.


The Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 6 and JD Fisheries Visakhapatnam swiftly coordinated to ensure the injured fishermen were transported to King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam for advanced medical care. This quick and effective response underscored the Indian Coast Guard's pivotal role in maritime rescue operations and their dedication to safeguarding the lives of fishermen in distress
